Birds That Won't Shut Up, and Other Trivia

The first in a weekly “7 Useless Facts about Karsten” column. The rotating final question will always be answered by a guest author.

First thought upon waking up this morning:
Dear birds chattering outside my window: It’s 8am. Shut yo damn beaks.

Cryptic line that I wrote today:
“Now I know for certain the jelly’s always going to come with the peanut butter.”

The five songs on repeat in my playlist right now:
“Hit the Ground and Run” by Great Big Sea
“Pretty Handsome Awkward”* by The Used
“Cave In” by Owl City
“Soldier On” by The Temper Trap
“Wait It Out” by Imogen Heap

If I could be anywhere in the world right now, I would be:
Sitting with an enormous mojito on Ocean Drive in South Beach. Or on the Spaceship Earth ride in Disney’s Epcot Center (aka the ride in the giant golf ball, aka the most relaxing 15 minutes of your life).

The last movie I watched start-to-finish:
The Proposal

When I was a baby, my two first words were:
“Hotdog. Soda.”** (A lifetime of healthy eating followed).

If Karsten were an alcoholic beverage, he would be a…
My answer: A Manhattan
Guest Author answer:
“Well, this demands careful consideration. Is he the type who demands a frilly umbrella tucked against the glass? Is he clear or dark liquor? Bottle or pilsner? Imported or domestic?

My gut reaction is to suggest he's an Appletini or a Cosmo, but neither one of those is really awkward enough to adequately convey Karsten's...unique sensibilities. And if I suggest that he's something Canadian like Labatt's, he'll pout because of his unfulfilled lifelong ambition to become a Canadian Mountie.

In the end, I think it's safe to say that Karsten is whatever drink ends up as the $2 Ladies "Knight" special.”
~Scott Tracey, Author of Witch Eyes (Flux, Fall 2011)

  1. Birds of a feather still wind up tasting like chicken if they prevent Karsten from getting his mandatory sleep in.

  2. I'm a firm believer that every baby's first word should be "uh-oh" and they should know how to use it in context.

  3. Why do i suddenly want a long-island ice tea? It wasn't even a given example...

  4. On every occasion but one, I'd agree that Spaceship Earth is the quintessential soothing theme park ride. BUT. My grandparents took me to Disneyworld/Epcot one day when I was about five years old, and it was intensely traumatic. I was a super tall kid, so I got to ride on Space Mountain, but I was too young and also a wimp so it terrified me. After the initial terror subsided, my grandparents decided Epcot would be a nice "soothing" follow up to chill me out. We started the Spaceship Earth ride, but there were "technical difficulties" and we spent about half an hour in pitch black, lurching randomly up and down on the track at sometimes terrifying (to my wimpy five-year-old self) speeds. I had theme park PTSD for freaking years after that.

More succinct and probably wiser commenting choice: I heart your taste in music.

  5. You're the first guy I've met who listens to Owl City, and you get mad props for that. And although "Saltwater Room" is better than "Cave In," I'll let it slide. Just this once.

  6. That guest post answer was the best. Actually, the whole post was pretty laugh worthy(in a totally good way). Also, The Temper Trap = <3

  7. LOVE Spaceship Earth. For some reason, I especially love the animatronic Bill Gates, in his garage, with a Gremlin (?) parked out front. I think it's a Gremlin, anyway.

  8. LOL! Dude, I can't stop watching The Proposal. It's always on, so I usually have it on in the background. If not that, it's usually Clash of the Titans.

    Oh, I loved Scott's answer!

  9. Loved your answers. The Proposal was a really good movie. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds always make me laugh.

  10. The more I think about it (which I have, in my semi-spare time), I'm increasingly intrigued by your imminent book.

Also, your (possibly/presumably) offhand mention of Spaceship Earth prompted me to write about it and Walter Benjamin, at probably tiresome length (http://themovingcastle.blogspot.com/2011/03/spaceship-earth-and-walter-benjamin.html)

  11. I saw you first on Twitter. Nice knowledge base for a first impression. As for the birds, I'd trade places with you. I've been living in the silence for six years now - I'm deaf.

I'm going to have to look up your play list. Love finding new music. And the answer is yes, I still listen in my own way. Find the lyrics and it's a visual euphoria for my eyes, just a different take on hearing. There's a longer version of how this is done. Another story for another day.

Nice to make your acquaintance. (Hugs)Indigo
